Magnolia Block Print

The third of my Flower series - in the language of flowers, Magnolia means Dignity.

This print, unlike Thistle and the abstracts series, started in Procreate. I learned from my mistakes with the image transfer method for Asphodel, and instead spent the time to print it and then trace the finished drawing on tracing paper and then use the rubbing method to further transfer that to the carving block.
I've got to say, that takes an awful lot of time in terms of set-up and I should probably just invest in carbon paper to skip at least a little bit of the time on it. I do like the ability to use digital tools for drawing it out, but drawing the image out on paper (or directly to tracing paper) is the fastest method and is how many of the abstracts series were done.
I have really enjoyed exploring the different styles offered by block printing- which is a media that I think heavily relies on a sense of contrast. How you give each element space and what that does for the feeling of the piece is a very enjoyable (if mind-bending) thought exercise.

The finished piece is printed onto a 8.5" x 11" page of varying colors, weights, and textures.
